Biography

Jeon Hye-bin (전혜빈) is a famous South Korean actress, singer and model. She has also written a book, run a clothing store and is experienced in dancing and gymnastics. Jeon is her family name, Hye-bin her given name. She was born on September 27, 1983 in Namyang, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.

Jeon Hye-bin went to Kyewon Arts High School and is an alumni of Dongguk University where she studied in the Department of Drama and Visual Studies.

In 2002, she debuted as member “Bin” of the all-girl K-Pop trio LUV. The group was founded by SidusHQ and also consisted of members Oh Yeon-seo (Hatnim) and Jo Eun-byul (Eun-byul). LUV is short for “Love yoUr Voice”. The group released their only album Story – Orange Girl on May 15, 2002. Their first single Orange Girl was highly successful and critics predicted a bright future for the trio. Shortly after, the group’s second single I Still Believe in You and a live promotion of the song Tears followed. Nevertheless, the trio split up in 2003 already. At that time, it was claimed that all members wanted to pursue their personal dreams. In 2014, Hye-bin also stated in an episode of Happy Together that the band’s success was overshadowed by the FIFA World Cup 2002 which was held partly in South Korea – LUV was therefore not as successful as originally predicted.

After LUV’s disbanding, Jeon Hye-bin focused on her musical solo career. The first single album under her stage name Bin titled Love Somebody hit stores on July 31, 2003. About two years later, she gained huge popularity and fame with the K-Pop album Volume 1: In My Fantasy (released on September 23, 2005). Especially the sexy single 2 A.M was a long-lasting success on domestic hit lists. While fans loved her sexy dance routine and performance for this specific song, Hye-bin was also criticized for being too suggestive and erotic. This led to a change of image and as a consequence, audiences saw a much tamer and cuter version of the singer for Bin-go, the second song performed from the album.

In 2003, Hye-bin also released a dance instruction and diet video called 이사돈 빈과 함께 하는 몸치 탈출 다이어트 (loosely translated: Let your body chi flow and diet together with instructor Bin) in which she teaches different styles of dances such as latin, pop, hip hop or jazz.

After successfully entering the Korean entertainment world with LUV, Hye-bin was able to grab various roles in Korean television shows. She was cast as Yoon Hee-seo for Sang-doo! Let’s Go to School! (상두야, 학교가자!) and appeared in the third season of the comedy series Nonstop (논스톱) in 2002 already. Three years later, she could be seen in 13 episodes of Banjun Drama (Match! Reverse Drama, 대결! 반전 드라마) and as character Cha Soo-jae in K-Drama Only You (온리 유). Between August 2004 and October 2006, Hye-bin was a regular on the segment Heroine 6 of KBS2’s variety show Happy Sunday (해피 선데이) in which she especially could show off her amazing dancing skills.

During that time, Hye-bin also scored leading roles in two feature films. In 2004, she starred alongside Kim Ha-neul, Nam Sang-mi and Shin-ee in Kim Tae-kyeong’s teenie horror flick Ghost (). One year later, she was cast as sexy high schooler Soo-yeon in the erotic comedy Wet Dreams 2 (몽정기 2).

In early 2006, Jeon Hye-bin confirmed rumors saying she underwent plastic surgery after a traffic accident. Nose and teeth reconstruction resulted in a notable change of her facial appearance which became a hot topic among fans and media.

After her first solo album in 2005, Hye-bin decided to give up her musical career to focus on acting. As a consequence, she could be seen in a number of different dramas in the late 2000s. Her most prominent roles during that time were those of Nam Seung-mi in A Witch in Love aka Witch Yoo Hee (마녀유희), Seol-yeong in King and I (왕과 나) and No Se-ra in The Scale of Providence (신의 저울). She also had cameos in On Air (온 에어) and He Who Can’t Marry (결혼못하는남자). Meanwhile, she also appeared in numerous variety show formats such as Happy Shares Company (행복주식회사), Love Letter (리얼 로망스 연애편지), X-Man (X맨), and Come to Play (놀러와).

In 2008, Jeon Hye-bin gained first experience as theatre actress when playing Ophelia in a stage adaption of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. She also was cast in a small role for the Korean musical Singles (싱글즈) which ran from 2009 to 2010.

In 2010, her role as Jeong-yeon in the OCN period drama Yaksha (야차) finally turned Jeon Hye-bin into an accomplished and highly demanded TV actress. As result, she was casted for the series My Love By My Side (내사랑 내곁에), Queen Insoo (인수대비) and The Queen of Office (직장의 신) in the following years. She also appeared as curry house owner Yoo-mi in the 2014 KBS drama special Taste of Curry (카레의 맛).

After an intensive phase of dieting, Jeon Hye-bin released her first Korean book Heaven’s Stylish Body (전혜빈의 스타일리시 바디) in June 2011. Besides stunning photosets of the author shot in Australia, the work offers weight loss tips, illustrated fitness exercises and facts on health food. It also includes a bonus book called Stylish Body Fitness Program (전혜빈의 스타일리시 바디 14일 프로그램). An iPad app followed on April 25, 2012.

Hye-bin opened her own online shopping mall for clothes and accessories called ByHeaven (바이헤븐) in 2012. During its existence, she acted both as CEO and model for the store until its closure on January 24, 2014. A few days prior to that, on January 17, 2014, sales were limited to offline only.

In 2012, Hye-bin made a return to the variety show scene by participating in the second season of the SBS reality documentary Law of the Jungle (정글의 법칙). In the series, she had to experience and survive the rough life of Madagascar’s nature together with other selected celebrities. She was also a regular on 2014’s Heart is Beating aka Beating Hearts (심장이 뛴다), a show in which celebrities undergo intense training to assist actual firefighters or emergency medical technicians. As the only female member of the team, Jeon Hye-bin showed her emotional side, however also surprised viewers with her courageous and hardworking attitude. She was highly praised for the eagerness and commitment that she has displayed.

With the role of Choi Hye-won in the successful KBS drama The Joseon Shooter (조선 총잡이), she followed her acting tradition of displaying evil supporting characters. Both critics and fans applauded her for her skillful performance in the show. Later in 2014, Jeon Hye-bin had a cameo in the final episode of Healer (힐러).

One year later, Hye-bin joined a number of other celebrities for the SBS variety show The Racer (더 레이서) and showed her talent for stock car racing.
